The local Pinewood Blades Bantam girls’ hockey team put the finishing touches on a storybook season by capturing the 10th-annual Stars Cup in Winnipeg over the weekend.
The Blades overcame a scrappy Thunder Bay Fury in Sunday’s gold-medal final with a thrilling 2-1 overtime victory.
Shae-Lynn Smith fired netted the winner with 53 seconds left in the extra session to propel the Blades to yet another first-place finish.
Taylor Dixon scored the Blades’ goal in the third period to tie the game shortly after the Fury had taken a 1-0 lead.
The Blades opened the tournament Friday with a landslide 8-3 win over the Kenora White Attack. Smith lit the lamp four times while Dixon netted a goal and two assists.
Hailey Shypit and Sydney Jones notched the other goals for Pinewood.
In their second game Saturday, the Blades doubled the Rubicon Royals 6-3. Smith netted four more goals while Shypit and Dixon added singles.
Then in their final round-robin game later that day, the Blades continued their offensive dominance with an 8-0 whitewash of the Winakwa Stars (Winnipeg).
Shypit had a hat trick in that one while Smith and Jessica Robinson scored two goals apiece.
Jones notched the Blades’ other goal while Dixon added two assists.
Kennadi Herbert, Joedy Morrisseau, and Taylor Gouin also drew assists.
