Running tonight through Friday morning, Fort Frances is the site of the Ontario Association of Police Service Boards Zone 1 semi-annual meeting.
Being held at La Place Rendez-Vous, about 50 delegates from police service boards from Marathon to the Manitoba border will meet for registration and a mix-and-mingle this evening, then attend workshops and undergo training tomorrow and Friday.
Coun. Rick Wiedenhoeft, who sits on the local Police Services Board along with chairman John McTaggart, Mayor Roy Avis, Glenn Witherspoon, Ron Scofield, and secretary Loreen Holt, said yesterday there’s an interesting lineup of topics to be covered.
The first talk at 9 a.m. will be a presentation by U.S. Customs regarding the Department of Homeland Security and how it’s going to impact on border operations.
This will be followed by a presentation by Grace Silander of Safe Communities Rainy River District on the “Safe Communities” program at 10 a.m.
Then at 11 a.m., Treaty #3 Police Chief Conrad DeLaronde and board chair Joe Red Thunder Boy will talk about how they operate, and how the Treaty #3 Police Service interacts with other police service boards and the OPP.
After lunch, there will be a presentation on dealing with students by local OPP community services officer Cst. Anne McCoy at 1 p.m., followed by a presentation at 2 p.m. regarding the relationship between police service boards and municipal councils.
The rest of Thursday will be filled with training for police service board members.
At 9 a.m. on Friday will be a presentation on Internet/computer security, followed by presentation at 10:15 a.m. on the opiates task force and methadone clinics.
These will be followed by a Zone 1 board meeting.
While conference attendees will register for the event, Coun. Wiedenhoeft said he could see no reason why the media and public could not attend the presentations.
