Annual flower, vegetable show set for Friday

The Fort Frances Horticultural Society’s 39th-annual flower and vegetable show, this year entitled “Garden Creations,” promises to be an exciting adventure for all—not just those with green thumbs.
“We have a lot of talented gardeners here who are all very proud of their creations,” said club president Helen Crook. “People will be amazed as to the beauty of the creations on display.”
The show runs this Friday (Aug. 10) from 2-8 p.m. at the old CN train station here.
At the show, many club members will display their floral and vegetable arrangements for the public to view. Non-members also are welcome to participate for a small fee.
The idea of the show each year is to get the community excited about horticulture and beautifying our community with flowers.
“We want to continue beautifying the community and get more people involved,” Crook stressed.
Participants will be eligible to win various awards, including novice gardener, best score in vegetable category, flower selection, and the grand prize for flower/vegetable category.
The local horticultural society holds monthly gatherings for its 50 some members from February through October each year. They also hold garden tours around town so members can enjoy each other’s hard work.
“We are always looking for more members to join our club and we are always open to learning about gardening secrets,” noted Crook.
Members pay an annual fee of $10 to help with any added expenses over the year.
Last year’s show saw more than 80 people walk through the doors of the old station, gazing and admiring the works.
“The show is strictly for viewing purposes as no products are sold there,” Crook said.
All of the exhibits are possible because of the hard work of the club members who “put a lot of thought into them all,” she added.
“It’s quite an education the garden language.”
Coffee and tea will be served throughout the show.
