Certificates, medallions, and some hardware were handed out Monday during the Fort Frances High School’s annual “recognition assembly” for academic achievement.
Principal Gord McCabe congratulated the students on their accomplishments so far, and encouraged all grades to step up and try to be involved in their school as well as keep up their academics.
McCabe called all of the award recipients “leaders” in their school and said they should be proud of their accomplishments.
“You folks, by your academic performance, by your involvement in the school, be it in clubs, activities, or signing up to participate in concerts, whatever it may be, have demonstrated yourselves to be student leaders,” McCabe said.
“You have shown in your behaviour, achievement, and level of involvement that you want to be a student leader.”
McCabe added he could never say enough “good things” about the high school.
The ceremony recognized achievements in academics, music, arts, leadership, clubs and organizations, as well as the Red Cross “First Responders.”
Emceed by Cody Carmody and Rachel Dutton, the pair called out the names of their peers and congratulated the academic dedication of the students.
Some 112 students earned a crest (three times on the honour roll), 48 received certificates (11 times on the honour roll), and 23 received pens (14 times on the honour roll).
The program that was passed out was adorned with a poem by Calvin Coolidge written in 1933. The poem, entitled “No reward without effort,” seemed to sum up the message of the assembly.
“Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. . . .”
