The 54th ladies’ bonspiel gets underway today (Feb. 23) with draws at 5 p.m. and 7:15 p.m. at the Fort Frances Curling Club. Spectators are welcome to watch all the action, which wraps up Sunday. Everyone also is invited to the post-banquet social on Saturday starting at 9 p.m.
Both Muskie hockey teams will open the best-of-three NorWOSSA semi-finals today (Feb. 23) versus the Kenora Broncos. The boys take to the ice at 7:15 p.m. at the Ice for Kids Arena (admission is $6 for adults and $4 for students) while the girls’ game starts at 7:30 p.m. at the ’52 Canadians Arena (admission is $5 for adults and $3 for children).

The M.E.C. “Music for Winter’s Eve” coffee house will be held Saturday, Feb. 24 starting at 7 p.m. at the Little Beaver Lodge. The annual “Official Oscar Party,” hosted by the Riverside Foundation for Health Care, will be held Sunday, Feb. 25 at 6 p.m. at the Memorial Sports Centre. Tickets cost $50 each (which includes a $25 tax receipt, a $10 entry into the “Oscar Mania” contest, and a variety of appetizers), which are available by calling 274-4803. Proceeds will go towards the CT Scanner fundraising drive.

An open house to showcase the Fort Frances Museum renovations, as well as to view Phase Two plans for the Heritage Tourism Project, will be held Tuesday, Feb. 27 from 2-6 p.m. at the museum.

A real Italian spaghetti supper, to support the Loncar family’s applications to remain in Canada, will be held Sunday, March 4 from 5-7 p.m. at Knox United Church. A public meeting on the Fort Frances Clinic will be held Monday, March 5 at 7 p.m. at the Civic Centre. Those wishing to make a presentation (maximum 10 minutes) must register with the town clerk prior to 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 1.
Parents of Grade 10 students who will be writing the literacy test are encouraged to attend a meeting on Wednesday, March 7 at 6:30 p.m. in conjunction with Parents’ Night at Fort High. A preparatory class will run from March 5-28 at FFHS, with the test itself being written on Thursday, March 29.
Charities interested in attending an information session on lotteries, to be hosted by the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario here on April 18, is asked to register at the Civic Centre prior to March 7. The session only will be held if enough charities sign up.
The La Verendrye Hospital Auxiliary will hold its next monthly luncheon meeting Monday, March 12 at noon at St. John’s Anglican Church. Tickets cost $12 each, which are available until March 9 at the hospital gift shop, Pharmasave, and Shoppers Drug Mart.
