William James “Jim” Chambers, age 95, of 133 Elm Crescent, Atikokan, Ontario passed away peacefully with his family at his side at home on Sunday, August 1, 2010.
He was born on January 23, 1915 in Maryfield, Saskatchewan to the late Fredrick and Violet Chambers.
During the war, Jim enlisted in the army and served his country overseas.
At the end of the war, he returned to Canada and moved to the Rainy River District.
On November 12, 1935, Jim was united in marriage to the former Grace Isabella Parker.
Over the years, they raised their three children, Don, Laila and Darrell. Jim worked as an underground miner at the mine in Atikokan for many years until his retirement.
He was a member of the Riverview United Church in Atikokan; and a member of the Royal Canadian Legion.
Jim was a kind gentle man and very well liked by everyone, and he will be missed dearly by family and friends.
He was predeceased by his wife, Grace Chambers, in 2003; one sister, Dorothy “Dixie” Roy; and one sister-in-law, Gladys Chambers.
Jim is survived by his three children, Don Chambers and wife Yvonne of Fort Frances, ON., Laila and husband Leo Goranson of McCauley Lake, ON., and Darrell Chambers and wife Liz of Atikokan, ON.; eleven grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
He is also survived by two brothers, Dave Chambers and wife Louise of Fort Frances, ON., Bruce Chambers of B.C.; one sister, Lorraine Hatch of B.C.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services to celebrate Jim’s life will be held on Thursday, August 5, 2010 at 1 pm at the Royal Canadian Legion Br. 145 in Atikokan, Ontario. Reverend Brad Ricci will officiate with interment in Little Falls Cemetery in Atikokan, Ontario.
The Royal Canadian Legion Br. 145 Color Guard will provide their tribute at the service.
Active pallbearers will be Leonard Goranson, Evan Collins, Jim Anness, Rick Guerts, Rick Chambers and Dale Chambers.
