William “Bill” teRaa, 93, of Emo, Ont., passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 23, 2013 at the Emo long-term care facilty in Emo, Ont.
Bill was born Feb. 9, 1920 in Borculo, The Netherlands to Arend Jan and Alieda teRaa (nee Kaemingh). He was the eldest of nine (two sisters and six brothers).
He married Johanna Hietland on Sept 6, 1946 and immigrated to Canada in June, 1948. After several years of farm labour outside of Winnipeg, Man., Bill purchased a farm in 1951 two miles north of Emo on Off Lake Rd in Dobie Township.
In those early years, he also worked in the bush and for Ontario Hydro.
His passion for the soil and livestock were evident on the farm. His sheep won many ribbons at the Rainy River Valley Agricultural Society’s fall fair in Emo. Bill often was spotted travelling to Emo on his tractor.
He is survived by his wife, Johanna, of Picture Butte, Alta.; his five children, Arend (Arjan) of Calgary, Alta., Gerda of Prince George, B.C., Gary of Smithers, B.C., Henry of Barrie, Ont., and Liz of Lethbridge, Alta.
He also is survived by numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; as well as most of his siblings, cousins, and nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Saturday, April, 27, 2013 at 2 p.m. at the Northridge Funeral Home in Emo, with Rev. Ralph Fluit officiating.
Interment will take place at a later date.
