WILLIAM ‘BILL’ HAYKA
William “Bill” Hayka, 81, of 452 Third St. E., Fort Frances, Ont., passed away suddenly at his residence on Friday, Sept. 21, 2007.
Bill was born May 14, 1926 in Arnes, Man. to the late Peter and Mary Hayka.
He was a member of St. Peter’s and Paul’s Greek Catholic Church in Arnes. In his early years, he worked as a commercial fisherman on Lake Winnipeg for 12 years.
On Aug. 28, 1965, he was united in marriage to the former Annette Meilleur. The family moved to Fort Frances, where Bill purchased his own heavy equipment and began working as a heavy equipment operator, and later for the Ministry of Natural Resources.
For enjoyment, he liked playing cards and loved the outdoors, especially fishing. But Bill’s first love was his family and friends that meant the world to him. His children and grandchildren were the love of his life.
He was predeceased by one sister, Anne Wiebe.
Bill is survived by his wife, Annette Hayka of Fort Frances, Ont.; one daughter, Vanassa Hayka and husband, Robert Wood, of Fort Frances, Ont.; one son, Kevin Hayka and wife, Hedy Ninke, of Vancouver, B.C.; and two grandsons, Ian and Aaron Selman, both of Dryden, Ont.
Also surviving are three brothers, Steve Hayka and wife, Jean, of Winnipeg, Man., John Hayka and wife, Jean, of Arnes, Man., and Tony Hayka and Jocelyn of Arnes, Man.; one sister, Millie Lefko of Winnipeg, Man.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Cremation has taken place at Rainy River Cremation Services in International Falls, Mn.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, Sept. 29, 2007 at 2:30 p.m. at Green Funeral Home in Fort Frances, with Fr. Francis Pudicherry officiating.
