Dr. William Andrew “Andy” McLachlin Russell, a family physician from 1947-1984, passed away peacefully Tuesday, March 23, 1999 at his home in Vineland with his family around him.
Dr. Russell was born in Sovereign, Sask. almost 82 years ago, where he attended public school and high school in Regina. His medical studies were at the University of Western Ontario in London.
He then served in the RCAF and, in 1947, moved to Smithville and then a year later to Beamsville.
Dr. Russell was instrumental in the establishment of the College of General Practice, now the College of Family Physicians of Canada, and was former president of the Ontario chapter. In 1978, he was named Canadian Family Physician of the Year.
Dr. Russell is survived by his wife, Ruth, and five daughters, Barbara and husband, Chris Raven, of Burlington, Mary and husband, David Hickling, of Fort Frances, Diane and husband, John Kiser, of Arnprior, Joan Russell of Toronto, and Margaret and husband, Richard van Gelder, of St. Catharines.
Also surviving are 10 grandchildren, Andrew and Mark Raven, Matthew and Heather Hickling, Jason, Brad, and Scott Kiser, and Stephanie, Ryan, and Hilary van Gelder.
He was predeceased by a brother, John Russell.
Cremation has taken place.
Following visitation at the Tallman Funeral Home in Beamsville on Friday, March 26, 1999, a memorial service was held Saturday, March 27, 1999 at Trinity United Church in Beamsville with Rev. Randy MacKenzie officiating.
