WILFRED GEORGE SANDERS

Sanders, Wilfred

The family of Wilf Sanders is sad to announce his passing on Thursday, April 13, 2017 at the age of 89 years.
Wilf was born on June 20, 1927 in Snowflake, Man. to Fredrick and Margaret (Daisy) Sanders.
He was raised on the farm as the youngest of six siblings before travelling to attend the University of Manitoba, School of Pharmacy. Here he met his wife of more than 65 years, Lyla (Mink).
Both licensed pharmacists, Wilf and Lyla moved to Fort Frances, Ont. in 1953. They immediately became active members of the community and began serving the public through the Clinic Pharmacy.
For the better part of the next 40 years, Wilf owned and operated Clinic Pharmacy (later known as Pharmasave) and worked as the Director of Pharmacy at La Verendrye General Hospital.
He long will be remembered for his positive work in retail pharmacy and in support of the medical staff at La Verendrye.
Wilf’s activity with community-minded associations was broad and included the responsibilities of high office with the Elks, Masonic Lodge, and the Shrine. He was proud of these affiliations, his leadership roles, and the receipt of his pins acknowledging more than 60 years of community service.
He enjoyed a good game of Bridge, and played in both men’s and mixed leagues for many years. No puzzle or crossword seemed too difficult.
His needlework skills also were amazing. He leaves behind many treasured articles of petit pointe, cross-stitch, and knitting.
Wilf loved life in Fort Frances. In particular, he enjoyed his time at the cabin on Rocky Inlet and later in life, his home on the Rainy River. He loved the calming influence of being near the water.
We all will miss the engaging conversations on a broad range of topics, his sharp wit, and, when you got to know him, his overall sense of humour.
Wilf was predeceased by his parents, Fred and Daisy; siblings, Lucy, Victor, Ollie, Cecil, and Pearl; and his granddaughter, Allison.
Left to mourn and celebrate his life are his wife, Lyla; sons, Craig (Maria) and Scott (Marlene); six grandchildren, Justin, Laura, Emily, Jessica, Madeline, and Abigail; and several nieces and nephews.
Friends are invited to join the family for a celebration of Wilf’s life on Saturday, April 22, 2017 from noon-2 p.m. at La Place Rendez-Vous. Words of reflection will be shared at 1 p.m.
A private family internment will take place at a later date.
If desired, in memoriam donations may be made to the charity of your choice.
