Walter Sobkowicz, 84, of Fort Frances, Ont., passed away peacefully on Monday, May 1, 2012 at Riverside Health Care Facilities, Inc. in Fort Frances.
He was born Feb. 3, 1928 in Fort Frances, where he resided for his entire life.
Walter is survived by his wife of 62 years, Astrid (Seger), and their five children, Linnea (Dave) Thiesen of Carmen, Man., and Konrad (Sue) Sobkowicz, Renae (Bill) Bodnarchuk, Sherry (Tom) Beck, and Michael (Sue) Sobkowicz, all of Fort Frances, Ont.; as well as many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nephews, and nieces.
He was predeceased by his parents, Mike and Olga; and sisters, Ann Dolk and Mary Charnesky.
After working as a barber for 30 years, Walter then worked at the local paper mill until retirement.
He was a devout Legion member and served on their Sick and Visiting committee for several years.
Walter was well-known for his soup, dill pickles, and head cheese. He always had several jokes on hand as he loved to make people smile.
Cremation has taken place.
A celebration of Walter’s life will be held Monday, May 7, 2012 from 2-4 p.m. at the Royal Canadian Legion in Fort Frances.
