Miskwotaegaabow – Waasii Doodem

Walter Caribou, 80, of Fort Frances, Ont., passed away on Wednesday March 30, 2022, at the La Verendrye General Hospital in Fort Frances.

He was born on May 4, 1941, in Lac La Croix First Nation to Walter and Alma Caribou. He lived in Lac La Croix First Nation before moving his family to Fort Frances. He was a man of many talents, working as a guide at Handberg’s Camp, Lakeland Marina, a bus driver, a small machine mechanic, medical van driver and driving taxi. He enjoyed fishing and hunting. He loved music and was a member of the late night jammers. He was a very fun, loving and caring person.

He will be greatly missed by his loving wife Doris; sons Gord and Faron; grandsons Randy and Ty; great-grandson Jackson; adopted son Billy Blackwell; sister Judy Herdig (Reg); in-laws Irene Smith, Tommy (Lorraine) Smith, Lillian (Henry) Ottertail, Dennis (Judy) Smith, Darlene Smith, Wanda Paishk, Brian (Roberta) Smith, Sandra (Justin) Smith, Sharlene (Andrew) Smith, Derek (Carrie) Smith and Daniel Smith; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Walter was predeceased by his parents Walter and Alma; brothers Gilbert and Alvin and sister Violet.

A traditional ceremony was held on Sunday, April 3, 2022, at the Nanicost Gymnasium in Fort Frances. Interment took place in Our Lady of Lourdes Cemetery in Couchiching First Nation, Ont.

The honourary pallbearers were Wes Debungie, Justin Boshey, Henry Ottertail, Tommy Councillor and Waylon Smith.

The active pallbearers were Teddy Atatise, Andrew Jourdain, Skylar Paishk, Andrew Easton, Cory Sky and Leslie Prince.
