Vivian Juanita Smith, 89, of 550 Osborne St., Fort Frances, Ont., passed away at her residence on Thursday, Feb. 2, 2012.
She was born June 15, 1922 in Burriss, Ont. to the late Edwin and Bertha Kennedy. On Nov. 4, 1940, she was united in marriage to Milton Smith.
She worked at Roste’s Bakery for nine years, the Bait Shop for three years, and Betty’s in Fort Frances. In earlier years, she worked for Northwest Bay Trading Post, was janitor at Burriss Public School for nine years, and for Vernon Armstrong at Birch Point Camp.
She will be dearly missed by her family and friends.
One of her great delights was being up at the lake boating and fishing. She was well-known for her baking, pickling, and wonderful meals.
Vivian enjoyed knitting and her Bingo evenings at Rose Manor. She also enjoyed visits to the country in Burriss with her son and daughter-in-law, especially last fall.
She spent many wonderful hours with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband, Milton Smith in 1990; sisters, Audrey Kennedy and Helen Geary; and brothers, Allan, Jim, and Bobby Kennedy.
Vivian is survived by her son, Dean (Emily) Smith of Devlin, Ont.; three grandchildren, Dale (Lorilee) Smith of Fort Frances, Ont., James (Donalda) Smith of Ignace, Ont., and Shelley (Ben) Janzen of Ridgetown, Ont.; great-grandchildren, Dustin, Joshua, Matthew, Nicole (Matt Plante), Riley (Molly), Alysha, Tiffany, James Jr., Lindsey, Jessica, Samantha (Tyler Goodison), and Amanda; two great-great-grandsons, Seth Smith and Tyzon Goodison; one great-great-granddaughter, Maddisyn Smith; one step-granddaughter, Debbie (Mike) Mulholland of Windsor, Ont.; and step great-grandchildren and their families.
She also is survived by her step-mother, Elda Kennedy; brothers, Ted, Roy, and Edward Kennedy; sisters, Isla Hayes, Faye Kennedy, and Betty Kennedy; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Feb. 7, 2012 at 1:30 p.m. at Green Funeral Home in Fort Frances, Ont.
Pastor David Groff officiated, with interment in Riverview Cemetery in Fort Frances.
Family and friends visited Monday, Feb. 6, 2012 from 7-9 p.m. at Green Funeral Home in Fort Frances.
The pallbearers were Hugh Geary, Harold Kellar, Tom Koski, Jacques Fiset Sr., Matt Smith, and Riley Kellar.
The honourary pallbearers were Vivian’s family and friends.
