It is with great sadness that the family of Viola Elizabeth Strand announces her passing on Tuesday, May 7, 2013 with her family by her side.
Viola was born April 13, 1920 on her family farm outside of Gull Lake, Sask. to Mary and Rudolf Strand.
She had three sisters, Ester Peterson (Harold), Helen Brown (Oscar), and Evelyn Strand, and one brother, Oscar Strand, who all predeceased her.
Viola has one daughter, Diane Marie Strand, born on March 23, 1951, who was the joy of her life.
Viola always worked hard to provide for herself and her daughter. After leaving the family farm, Viola worked in tourism in Nestor Falls and Sioux Narrows, Ont.
She worked on many farms in Manitoba as a housekeeper and cook. She also worked in the Fort Frances Bakery, as well as the Coca-Cola bottling factory in Fort Frances, Ont. for Dave Marsh.
In 1975, Viola started work for John Stewart at Seine River as a cook. She cooked and baked at the camps for many years, until her health declined and she retired.
The Stewart family became like her second family and she had many fond memories.
Viola is survived by her daughter, Diane (Greg) Jewell; two grandsons, James (Melody) Woods of International Falls, Mn. and Christopher (Kelly) Woods of Fort Frances, Ont.; step-grandchildren, Christina Jewell of Winnipeg, Man. and Joey Jewell (Mallory) of Devlin, Ont.; and two great-grandchildren, Kaleb Woods and Marlee Woods, both of Fort Frances, Ont.
Viola’s grandchildren and great-grandchildren were the apple of her eye. She loved them all dearly and enjoyed spending time with them.
Viola also is survived by numerous nieces who were very close to her, including Evelyn Hicks and family of Fort Frances, Ont., Darlene (Paul) Begin and family of Fort Frances, Ont., Kathy Von Niebelschutz and family, Mary Filion (Rene) and family from Saskatchewan, and Betty (Leonard) Brown, also from Saskatchewan.
Cremation has taken place.
A celebration of Viola’s life will take place Saturday May 11, 2013 at 11 a.m. at the Northridge Funeral Home in Emo, Ont.
