It is with great sadness that the family of Vernon Mainville announce his passing on Friday, June 7, 2002 at La Verendrye General Hospital in Fort Frances, Ont.
He was born Sept. 12, 1940 in Couchiching First Nation, Ont. to the late Hector and Mary Mainville.
Vernon worked for the N.N.A.D.A.P. as a drug and alcohol counsellor for about 17 years. Following his retirement, he remained active in the A.A. program helping those in need.
Vernon served on band council for two terms, and was a recipient of the Tom Longboat Medal for hockey. Vernon took great pride of his scrapbook, hockey, and baseball. He also was an avid Bingo player and fisherman.
Vernon enjoyed having coffee with his friends, and spending quality time with his children and grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Delores Mainville in 1972; two sons, Bill in 1978 and Vernon Jr.; three brothers, Melvin, Herman, and Willard; two sisters, Loretta and Nora; and his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Willie and Gladys Cobiness.
Vernon is survived by his wife, Linda, of Couchiching First Nation, Ont.; three sons, Greg (Pam), Glen (Diane), and Chris (Susan), all of Kenora, Ont.; two daughters, Valerie of Big Trout Lake, Ont., and Corrine (Brendon) of Lac La Croix, Ont.; special grandchildren, Sonya, Greg Jr., Nathan, Brendan, Jonathan, Daniel, Cody, Harley, Nathasa, Dion, Chantel, Venessa, Henry, and Brendon; two stepsons, Kyle of Louisiana, and Everett (Veronica), of Norway House, Man.; two stepdaughters, Yvette of Louisiana and Debra of Edmonton, Alta.; and three stepgrandchildren, Justin, Brett, and Skylee.
Also surviving are three sisters, Donalda (Louis) of Couchiching First Nation, Ont., Mary Jane of Thunder Bay, Ont., and Valerie (Jack) of Toronto, Ont.; one brother, Steve Mainville of Couchiching First Nation, Ont.; and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, June 12, 2002 at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Couchiching First Nation. Fr. Eugene Whyte O.M.I. will officiate, with interment in Our Lady of Lourdes Cemetery in Couchiching First Nation.
Friends may visit Tuesday, June 11, 2002 at the Multi-Use Building in Couchiching First Nation. Parish prayers will be offered at 7 p.m.
Pallbearers will be Dean Bethune, Tim Mainville, Jesse Livingston, Steve Boyer, Steve Mainville Jr., and Bernard (Sam) Bruyere.
Honourary pallbearers will be Allan Morrisseau, Clarence Jourdain, Albert Calder, Melvin Morrisseau, Conrad Morrisseau, and Ken Morrison.
