It is with heaviest hearts and bruised spirits that our family announces the passing of Vernon Horton Sr., 61, of Rainy River First Nations, Ont., on Friday, Jan. 6, 2017 at the Emo Health Centre in Emo, Ont.
Vernon was born on June 22, 1955 in Emo.
During his lifetime, Vernon worked in many different fields that varied until his last employment as a water treatment plant operator. He enjoyed watching hockey, spending time with his family and friends, and treasure hunting.
He also loved to dance, whether it was a social dance or at a pow-wow. His family was the world to him, and he was known for his sense of humour and his stories.
Vernon studied at the California State University in Sacramento and served in the 82nd Airborne Division U.S.
He will be greatly missed by his spouse, Stephanie Blackjack; his children, Daniah Horton (Ron Bruyere), Vernon Horton Jr. (Chelsea Jack-Allan), Dustin Horton, Misty Perreault, Nicole Perreault (Daniel Morrisseau), Anthony Morrisseau, and Daphinie Blackjack-Horton (Joseph Thunder); and his many grandchildren.
Vernon also is survived by his sister-in-law, Berla Horton; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents; son, Damien Horton; granddaughter, Ryder Horton; brothers, Robert Horton and Gaylord (Melvina) Horton; nephew, Darryl Horton; and grandparents, Mary and James Horton.
A traditional wake was held Monday, Jan. 9, 2017 from 3 p.m. at the Rainy River First Nations gymnasium, followed by a traditional service there on Tuesday, Jan. 10, 2017 at 10 a.m., with Elder Albert Hunter officiating.
Interment in Rainy River First Nations.
The pallbearers were Marcel Horton, Brian Kabatay, Gary Medicine, Jimmy Leonard, Alton Brown, and Roger Whitecrow.
The honourary pallbearers were Steve Martineau, Bobbie Morrison, Greg Bombay, Will McGinnis, Gordon “Oranges” Kelly, Sonny McGinnis, Doug Horton, and Delbert Horton.
