The family sadly announces the passing of Verna Pearl Barsy, 80, of Rainy River, Ont., on Thursday, Oct. 1, 2015 at the long-term care facility in Rainy River.
Verna was born in Sleeman, Ont. to Holgar and Fanny Armstrong.
Verna was very active in the community, belonging to many groups and associations, including the Rainy River Royal Canadian Legion Auxiliary (serving as auxiliary president for eight years), Rainy River Curling Club, Red Hatters, Knox United Church in Rainy River, the Rebekah Lodge, and Eastern Star.
She worked at various businesses over the years, including Lowes Lumber, the Town of Rainy River, The Clothes Closet, Rainy River Drugs, and the CN Beanery.
She enjoyed curling, watching the Blue Jays, baseball, and going to the cabin with Gerry. She also loved to spend time with her nieces and nephews and their families.
Verna will be greatly missed by her special friend, Gerry Marchuk; siblings, Stanley (Linda) Armstrong, Gordon (Jeanette) Armstrong, Phyllis (Don) Lewis, and Donna (Herb) Govier; sisters-in-law, Darlene Armstrong and Diane Armstrong; and numerous nieces and nephews and friends.
She was predeceased by her parents, Holgar and Fanny; brothers, Norman (Bobby) Armstrong and Ron Armstrong; infant brothers, William and Charles; and her husband, Alex Barsy.
Family and friends will be received on Thursday, Oct. 8, 2015 from 7-9 p.m. at the Knox United Church in Rainy River, where a celebration of her life will be held Friday, Oct. 9, 2015 at 11 a.m., with Rev. Frances Flook officiating.
Interment will take place in Forest Lawn Cemetery in Rainy River.
The honouray pallbearers will be Calvin Armstrong, Tom Armstrong, Danny Armstrong, Jimmy Armstrong, Corrie Govier, Russell Govier, John Bouchard, Jeff Marchuk, Colton Marchuk, and Reece Marchuk.
