Verna L. Langlie passed away at home in St. Augustine, Fla. on May 11, 2009.
She was born in 1915 in Howard Lake, Mn. to Bertha and Howard Ferrell.
She spent most of her life in Bemidji, Mn., graduating from Bemidji High School in 1932, Bemidji Normal School in 1934, and Bemidji State College in 1960.
Verna taught elementary school for several years in small towns in northern Minnesota, including Plummer, where she met her husband, Helmer “Tuss” Langlie, whom she married on Feb. 24, 1941.
After World War II, she and Tuss moved to Nestor Falls, Ont., where he and Bob Booren had started a hunting and fishing resort. During the winters from 1948 through 1957, Verna and the kids went to Hillsboro, Ore., where she resumed her teaching career.
In 1957, the family moved back to Bemidji, where Verna taught for many years in neighbouring Red Lake. Summers continued to be spent in Nestor Falls.
Verna and Tuss continued to live in Nestor Falls and Bemidji until ill health forced a change in 2001.
They moved to Cleveland, Ohio for a year until their daughter was able to retire, and then all moved to St. Augustine.
Verna enjoyed gardening, reading, and all kinds of crafts. She managed to incorporate all of her hobbies into her classroom teaching, and passed her enthusiasms onto many of her students, children, and grandchildren.
Verna was predeceased by her oldest son, Thomas, in 1976; by Tuss in 2004; and by her parents and all of her siblings.
She is survived by her daughter, Jean; son, Michael; grandchildren, Anna, Dan, Josi, Kendra, Mark, Michael, Michele, and Tom; and by 11 great-grandchildren.
Also surviving are her brothers-in-law, Edwin and Gordon Langlie; and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, Aug. 8, 2009 at 11 a.m. at Greenwood Cemetery in Bemidji, with Rev. John Roberts of the Bemidji United Methodist Church officiating.
In lieu of flowers, in memoriam donations may be made to the Nestor Falls United Church of Canada, P.O. Box 189, Nestor Falls, Ont., P0X 1K0.
