VELMA (VAL) MAY GRANT

It is with our deepest sorrow we share the passing of our beloved mother Velma (Val) May Grant on January 11, 2026, in Emo, Ontario.

Val was born on July 24, 1922, to parents George and Adelaide Leslie and grew up in the Mill Creek-Oakville area.

Val was predeceased by her husband Evan; brother Alan (Marge) and son-in-law Frank Affettuso. She is survived by daughter Elizabeth and son Peter (Sherri); grandson Michael Kruger along with  numerous relatives. She will be deeply missed by all.

Val’s first job at the age of 19 (1941) was teaching in Piney, Man. She would later go to university at the age of 44 (1966) and get her teaching degree. A credit to her strong character.

Some of her fondest memories are from when her and Dad lived in Atikokan/Steep Rock and worked in the Steep Rock Mines. She shared so many stories about all the wonderful times with great friends they had met and made before moving to Rainy River.

Rainy River is where she started teaching and did so until she retired. She adored the children and loved teaching them. It showed as many students kept in touch and you’d often hear “Mrs. Grant. She taught me. She was my favourite”

After retirement she loved to travel, going on many trips with her childhood best friend Ruth as well as trips with Lisa and Frank. She also loved the lake, whether it was on the deck, by the lake on a sunny afternoon or in the boat fishing, enjoying the time there. She caught her last walleye at 102, then decided she could just eat chips and relax.

She also loved her little white house at the end of Miller Street especially in the spring when the creek would roar with the spring run off.

She had many friends and all were so dear to her. She loved visiting, sharing fun and joking around with everyone.

She was such a sweet spirited person and easy to love.

Cremation has taken place and no service will be held.
