Valeda Larocque, 103, formerly of Pinewood, Ont., passed away peacefully on Sunday, Sept. 13, 2015 at Rainycrest Long-Term Care in Fort Frances, Ont.
Valeda was born Jan. 11, 1912 in Pattullo Township, Ont. to Felix and Emily Landry.
She was united in marriage to Leo Larocque on Sept. 30, 1930. They settled on a property just west of Pinewood along the Pine River, where she remained for the next 72 years.
Valeda was a hard worker and loved to garden, knit, and quilt—making hundreds (if not thousands) of socks for her family and friends over the years.
In her early years, she often made luncheons for the students attending Our Lady of the Way School in Pinewood and often boarded teachers for the school in her home.
She will be fondly remembered by her children, Therese Gullekson of Pender Island, B.C., Philip (Marguerite) Larocque of Rainy River, Ont., Elise Boyda of Atikokan, Ont., Hubert (Margaret) Larocque of Rainy River, Ont., and Yvette Lauzon of Fort Frances, Ont.; 29 grandchildren; 100 great-grandchildren and many great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Valeda was predeceased by her husband, Leo; daughter, Orise (Leo) Langlais; sons-in-law, Paul Gullekson, Frank Boyda, Emil Tyhy, and Philip Lauzon; grandson, Gerry Langlais; granddaughter, Carla-Mae Lauzon; her 11 siblings; and numerous extended family members.
Parish prayers will be held Friday, Sept. 18, 2015 at 7 p.m. at Our Lady of the Way Catholic Church in Pinewood, followed by a funeral mass on Saturday, Sept. 19, 2015 at 11 a.m., with Fr. Allan Lapay as celebrant.
Interment will take place in Our Lady of the Way Catholic Cemetery in Pinewood.
The pallbearers will be Larry Larocque, Leo Larocque, Raymond Lauzon, Glenn Boyda, Claude Langlais, and Denis Larocque.
