It is with great regret that we announce the passing of Thomas Fraser, 54, of Fort Frances, Ont. at the Riverside health care facility on Tuesday, Aug. 15, 2006.
Thomas was born Jan. 15, 1952 in Atikokan, Ont. Shortly thereafter, he became a foster child to Richard and Amy Orme of Emo, Ont. Thomas resided with the Orme family for seven years, after which he moved to a Community Living facility in Smith Falls, Ont. and then back to Thunder Bay, Ont.
When it was time for Thomas to be out on his own, he left Thunder Bay and came to Fort Frances, where he has resided since.
Thomas participated in many athletic sports in the Special Olympics across Ontario, and has many trophies, medals, and ribbons for his efforts. He was especially proud of his bowling accomplishments.
While residing in Thunder Bay and Fort Frances, he was associated with ARC Industries for a time.
Thomas was a valued member and extremely proud to belong to the Salvation Army. He helped them in their many endeavours, such as parades, the food bank, and ringing the bell at the “bubble” at Christmas time in various businesses, or whatever task they had for him.
He enjoyed nature, gardening, his pets, and crafts. Many people have special gifts Thomas made for them.
He was a strong person who coped very well with his disabilities. He had a kind and sharing personality, and faced life with courage, determination, creativity, and kindness.
Thomas was a gentle soul.
In May, 2003, he married Angela Pernsky and they have spent the last three years living in Fort Frances. Angela also is involved in Special Olympics and they have had many enjoyable trips to places like Kenora, Dryden, and Thunder Bay to participate in their sports.
Thomas will be sadly missed by his loving wife and soul-mate, Angela; his in-laws, Jill Pernsky and John Markus of Emo, Ont., and Sonny, Tammy, and Lacey Pernsky, all of Kenora, Ont.; and his foster family, Pat Lundy of Thunder Bay, Ont., Janet and Gary Judson of Emo, Ont., Mavis and Frank Izzard of Horsefly, B.C., and Arthur and Anneke Orme of Garson, Man.
Thomas also will be fondly remembered by his many friends and extended family.
Thomas was predeceased by his foster parents, Richard and Amy Orme; and brother-in-law, Cleland Lundy.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, Aug. 26, 2006 at 11 a.m. at the Northridge Funeral Home in Emo, with Capt. Angel Sandoval-Silva officiating.
Interment in Emo Cemetery in Emo.
Handi-van transportation will be departing from the Salvation Army Citadel (316 Victoria St.) at 10 a.m. and returning to Fort Frances after the service.
