It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Sylvio Joseph Marcel “Syl” Turcotte on Tuesday, March 10, 2026, at La Vérendrye Hospital at the age of 89. With his loving family by his side, Syl passed away peacefully.
Syl was born on December 21, 1936, in Morris, Manitoba, to Henry and Irene Turcotte. As a child, he attended French Catholic school before the family later moved to Kenora, Ontario.

Syl’s life in aviation began in Kenora, a career that allowed him to build friendships that lasted decades. He first worked at Rusty Myers Flying Service before partnering with his son David in the operation of Lakeland Aviation. Syl later moved to Thunder Bay, where he spent many years working at Wasaya Airways. He eventually concluded his aviation career running his own business, Turk’s Aircraft Repair.
Syl loved to drive and could often be found travelling to visit friends in Sault Ste. Marie, throughout Eastern Canada, and across the United States. Many of his younger friends affectionately referred to him as their “second dad,” and those who knew him often spoke of the deep respect they had for him.
Syl’s generosity, kindness, gift of the gab, and sharp wit were some of his greatest qualities. His family and friends will always cherish the many stories, laughter, and memories he shared with them.
Syl was predeceased by his parents, Henry and Irene Turcotte; his spouse, Hazel Turcotte; his sons, Darren and Jordie Turcotte; and his granddaughter Krista Turcotte.
Syl will be deeply missed by his partner, Jeanette Anderson; his children, David (Nicole) Turcotte and Sandra (Rob) Turcotte; and his daughter-in-law, Fawn Turcotte. He will also be remembered by his grandchildren: Derek (Jessie) Turcotte, Riley (Brittany) Turcotte, Randy (Jacklynn) Turcotte, Landon Turcotte, Cole (Ambili) Turcotte, Taylor (Kendyn) Turcotte, and Jayde (Tammy) LaPlante.
He leaves to mourn Jeanette’s family, Mike (Kim) Anderson, and their children, Paige and Hannah Anderson, who affectionately referred to him as “Steppie.” He will be fondly remembered by his adopted family, the McKinnons.
Syl is also survived by numerous great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
As per Syl’s wishes, there will be no service. In lieu of flowers, donations in Syl’s memory may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada.
The family would like to extend their sincere gratitude to the doctors and nurses at La Vérendrye Hospital for their care and compassion.
Rest easy, Syl. We are better people for having known you and having you in our lives. Words cannot express how deeply you will be missed. Life will not be the same without you, but we take comfort in knowing you are at peace.
Arrangements entrusted to Northridge Funeral Home Ltd., Emo, Ontario.
