SYD COPPEN

Peacefully, with family at his bedside, Syd Coppen passed away Sunday, Feb. 20, 2011.
Born on Saturday, Jan. 28, 1922 in Emo, Ont. to Sid and Jessie Coppen, he resided in the Fort Frances, Ont. area.
Syd served overseas during World War II and was wounded. After a lengthy recovery in London, England, and further convalescence in Winnipeg, Man., he married his childhood sweetheart (Evelyn) and they started their life together in Fort Frances.
He is survived by son, Bill (Louise) Coppen of Red Lake, Ont. and their children, Kari of Abbotsford, B.C. and Scott of Amesbury, Mass.; daughter, Lorene Coppen of Vernon, B.C. and her two daughters, Trista of Vernon, B.C. and Kelly of Vancouver, B.C.; daughter, Kelly (Ed) Plichta of Bear’s Pass, Ont.; daughter, Paula of Warroad, Mn.; and son, Patrick of Calgary, Alta.
Also surviving are seven great-grandchildren.
Following retirement after a lengthy career at the paper mill, Syd built and operated Coppen’s Resort located at Bear’s Pass on Rainy Lake. Syd enjoyed a lifelong passion for the outdoors, and spent many happy hours fishing and hunting with family and friends.
Syd also traveled extensively with his family to the Caribbean, Mexico, England, and Hawaii late into his 80s.
A celebration of life for Syd will follow later this summer at Coppen’s Resort.
