Niiyokamiginang – Wazhashk doodem
It is with great sadness that the family of Stewart Henderson announces his passing on Saturday, July 2, 2022, in Thunder Bay, Ont.
Stewart was born on November 24, 1954, in Emo, Ontario, to Allan and Edith Henderson. As a young man, he started working with his father doing logging. He continued working for the Mitaanjigamiing First Nation Community all his life, as Chief, as a member of Council, as Economic Development Officer. He was also apart the Flooding & Land Claim Committee for Mitaanjigamiing. He was a hardworking man who worked with multiple organizations in his life.
Growing up he played hockey, baseball and basketball. As his children grew he coached hockey. He was a big sports fan, especially to his Toronto Maple Leafs. He loved children and they were drawn to him, he encouraged everyone to call him their “Papa.” He opened up his home to anyone when they needed and tried his best to help them out when he could. He had a big heart who did everything he could to keep his family happy.
Stewart was predeceased by his wife Barbara Kabatay; parents; son Rick Kabatay; siblings Alfred Henderson, Alana Fyfe and John Cochrane; and an infant granddaughter.
He will be greatly missed by his children Stuart Kabatay and Jodie Kabatay; grandchildren Bryce, Aara, Brody, Freedom, Azariah, Luca, Shyne Kabatay, Taneecha Morrison, Cyntaisha Jourdain and John Houle; siblings James A. Henderson, Janice Henderson (Edwin), Allan Henderson Jr., Donna Anderson, Joe Cochrane, Derrick Cochrane, Bev Cochrane (Desmond), Alex Cochrane (Leanne), Brenda Ducharme (Pierre), Deborah Morrison, Roy Morrison, Ed Morrison and Bill Morrison; uncle Willis McGinnis; aunts Mary Natawance and Mildred Bruyere; as well as many nieces, nephews and friends.
A traditional wake will be held on Thursday, July 7, 2022, from 3:00 p.m. at the Mitaanjigamiing First Nation Multi Use Building.
A traditional funeral will be held on Friday, July 8, 2022, at 10:00 a.m. at the Mitaanjigamiing First Nation Multi Use Building. Elder Tommy Councillor will officiate with interment in the Mitaanjigamiing First Nation Cemetery.
The pallbearers will be Raymond Johnson, Jeff Adams, Casey Adams, Allan Henderson III, James Comegan, Brad Fyfe, Alex Cochrane, and Desmond Jourdain,
The honourary pallbearers will be Jason Wilson, Edwin Natawance, Howie Hampton, Mike Kabatay and Robert Yerxa.
