It is with extreme sadness that the family of Steven Douglas Huitikka announce his unexpected passing on Wednesday, Jan. 27, 2010 at St. Michael Hospital in Toronto, Ont.
Steven was born June 11, 1973 in Fort Frances, Ont., the youngest son of Don and Dorothy Huitikka.
Steve spent his early years in Finland, Ont., where he attended Sturgeon Creek School. He then moved to Thunder Bay, Ont., where he pursued his love of gymnastics and power tumbling.
It was from the club in Thunder Bay that he fine-tuned his power tumbling skills that led to his chance to represent Canada at the Power Tumbling World Championship in New Zealand.
We were very proud that he placed 12th in the world.
It was soon after this that he moved to Toronto and made Toronto his home for the last 16 years.
Steven is survived by his mom and dad, brothers, Hoot and Mike; neice, Elysia; adopted brother and friend, Tom; and special cousin, Wanda Heyens.
He also is survived aunts and uncles, Marie and Alf, Lorraine and Joe, LaVerne and Bill, Roberta and Randy, Reino and Agnes, Helena, Helen, Olavi and Marlyce, Bob and Cathy, and Rick and Karen; and numerous cousins and friends.
He was predeceased by his maternal and paternal grandparents, Bob and Maude Calder and Onni and Aili Huitikka; cousins, Patrick and Rob Veran; and uncle, Albert Huitikka.
A memorial service was held Wednesday, Feb. 3, 2010 at 2 p.m. at Northridge Funeral Home in Emo, Ont., with Rev. Eileen Bragg officiating.
