It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of Steven Dale “Beaver” Morrisseau, 66, of Couchiching First Nation on January 28, 2024, at his home on Couchiching First Nation.
Steven was born on May 11, 1957, to the late Emil and Melvina Morrisseau, nee Bruyere.
Steven lived all his life on Couchiching. Steven was employed at Nickle Lake Lumber, Vernon Armstrong Lumber Company and guided at Northern Light camp, Camp Manitou, as well as several other camps in the district. “Beaver” worked as the maintenance supervisor for Couchiching First Nation for over 20 years, where he retired at the age of 65. He trained and shared his knowledge of the community facilities and operations with new workers to ensure a smooth transition.
Beaver was a goalie for Couchiching Raiders in his early years, he enjoyed golfing, billiards, and was a handyman who learned many skills from his dad, using those skills to help out his family and friends when needed. Beaver liked to watch his nephews and nieces play baseball, he could always be found parked outside centre field. He enjoyed watching the kids play hockey and golf. His favourite pastime was watching movies and driving his grandchildren to various sporting events and supporting them all the way through. As a guide Beaver enjoyed his fishing, he had his devoted customers, one of his customers even wrote a song about Beaver.
Steven is predeceased by his parents Emil and Melvina Morrisseau (nee Bruyere); brothers Clifford, Faron and Kerry; nephews Jesse, Chuck, Marcy, Phillip and baby Morrisseau/Vivian.
Steven is survived by his siblings Marty Morrisseau Jr. (Monica), Lorne Morrisseau, Shelly Vivian (George), Sandra Morrisseau (Charlie), Harlan Morrisseau and Dennis Morrisseau (Jolene); grandchildren Kade Evan Bruyere and Logan McPherson; numerous nieces and nephews. He is also survived by life long friend Jane Councillor and her children, as well as their grandchildren.
He is survived by his (step-)children Charity, Angela, Joseph, Kristen and their mother Beatrice.
A funeral service was held on Tuesday, February 6, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Lourdes Church at Couchiching with Father Gino Mathias officiating. Interment took place at Our Lady of Lourdes Cemetery in Couchiching.
Honourary pallbearers were Sheldon Perrault, Blake Bruyere, Greg Baker and Everett Jourdain.
