Stefania Polz, 75, of 1229 Third St. E., Fort Frances, Ont., passed away at La Verendrye General Hospital in Fort Frances on Saturday, Dec. 2, 2000.
She was born Aug. 3, 1925 in Hochwies, Czechoslovakia to the late John and Maria Greger. During the war, Stefania and her family evacuated to Germany. There she met Edward “Ed” Polz and later married him on Nov. 2, 1947 in Einbeck, Germany.
In March, 1949, they moved to Canada and settled in Fort Frances, where they had lived since.
Stefania was a member of St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church in Fort Frances, and she worked for 30 years at La Verendrye Hospital in the Purchasing Department.
Each summer she could be found picking blueberries and sharing the many pails that she picked with both family and friends. She enjoyed her garden and flowers, and devoted much of her time caring for family members.
Stefania is survived by her husband, Ed Polz of Fort Frances, Ont.; two children, Gerhard “Gerry” Polz and wife, Mary, and Christine Polz; and grandson, Raymond Polz, all of Fort Frances, Ont.; three sisters, Irene and husband, August Nolte, Pauline and husband, Alfred Schneider, and Helene Forsterling, all of Germany; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2000 at 10 a.m. at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church in Fort Frances. Father Eugene Whyte O.M.I. officiated, with interment in Holy Cross Cemetery in Fort Frances.
Friends visited Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2000 from 7 until 9 p.m. at Green Funeral Home in Fort Frances. Parish prayers were offered at 7:30 p.m.
Pallbearers were Albert Magnan, Sam Piccinato, Fritz Kunkel, Ray Stewart, Ray Dolph, and Larry Kivimaki.
