SARAH BRIDGET ‘BRIDIE’ DOLK
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, Sarah “Bridie” Dolk.
Sarah passed away, after a brief illness, in her home on Tuesday, March 18, 2008 with her family by her side.
She was born Sept. 27, 1927 in Mount Carmel, Salmonier, Newfoundland.
During the Second World War, she met and married the love of her life, Raymond, while he was serving in the Royal Canadian Navy. The two of them enjoyed some 60 years of marriage, raising five children.
Mom’s priority in life was her family, but she still managed to have a career. She was employed for a number of years at the Rainy Lake Hotel and later on joined the staff of the La Place Rendez-Vous dining lounge and hotel.
She was a very outgoing and friendly person who thoroughly enjoyed being around people. She always had a smile on her face, loved to tell jokes, and all her patrons at her places of employment enjoyed and respected her immensely.
She constantly would receive cards, letters, and telephone calls from people from various places who had met her while they were visiting Fort Frances on holidays. This always gave her a big lift to know she had touched somebody in a positive manner.
Mom’s passion was her cooking and baking. She would spend hours making homemade meals (“None of this store-bought stuff, you never know what’s in it” is what she would say).
She was very well-known for her apple pies. Every summer, she would gather up the apples from her apple tree in the yard and begin her ritual of making her famous apple pies. She had a regular clientele waiting for a phone call telling them that their pies were ready.
She was very proud of her cooking/baking abilities.
Mom’s roommate and friend after Dad passed away was her loving cat, “Ginger.” A one person cat for sure. She received great pleasure and doted on her little furry friend on a daily basis.
Mom was predeceased by her husband, Raymond, in May of 2004; parents, David and Sarah Power; brothers, Jack Power, Allan Power, William Power, Richard Power, David Power, Elias Power, and Frank Power; sisters, Annie Roy, Dinah Power, Mary Dinn, and Pauline Power; brother-in-law/sister-in-law, Walter and Ann Dolk; and great-granddaughter, Taras Lynne Ava Dolyny.
Mom is survived by her brother, Peter Power; as well as her children, Dennis (Lynne), Carl (Judy), Terry (Mary), Larry (Jan), and Trudy (Andy Christian).
She also is survived by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Brooke (Scott Booth, and Ryley and Lane), Tiffany (Rustyn Dolyny, and Ava), Steven (Shauna, and Jordan, Jessie, and Kaelyn), Kevin (Sherri, and Alexis, Tina, and Brady), Shae (Steve Felix, and Cohen, Piper, and Nicole), Misty (Mark Neilson), Corey (Michelle), Jeneen DesChamps, Jay DesChamps (Wendy, and Jaelynn and Gracynn), Todd (Dee), and Kristina (Peter Mannes, and Madison); her extended family and dear friends, Connie and Fred McRitchie (Shawna, Troy, Aubrey, and Aurora); and good neighbours, Terry and Wanda Duffy (Brandon and Kendra).
Mom also is survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, March 25, 2008 at 2 p.m. at Green Funeral Home in Fort Frances, Ont. Pastor Brian Keffer will officiate, with interment in Riverview Cemetery in Fort Frances.
Visitation will be Monday, March 24, 2008 from 7-9 p.m. at Green Funeral Home.
The pallbearers will be her grandchildren, Todd, Corey, Scott, Rustyn, Steve, and Peter.
The honorary pallbearers will be her sons, Dennis, Carl, Larry, Terry, and Andy, and good friends, Fred McRitchie and Terry Duffy.
If friends so desire, in memoriam donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, P.O. Box 444, Fort Frances, Ont., P9A 3M8 or c/o Green Funeral Home, P.O. Box 427, Fort Frances, Ont., P9A 3M8.
