Peacefully and quietly on Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2007, Vernice Eklund passed away at Grandview Lodge in Thunder Bay, Ont.
Vernice was born April 19, 1917 in International Falls, Mn. At a young age, she moved with her parents to Rainy River District, settling in Morson, Ont.
On Nov. 14, 1938, she married Rudolf Eklund and together they made their lifelong home in Nestor Falls. Ont., where they managed a tourist camp for many years.
They also took care of many seasonal residences, and in doing so formed many close friendships.
Vernice was very active in the community, especially the Nestor Falls United Church and the U.C.W. She also was an excellent cook and there were many happy times spent with family and friends enjoying her great meals, which she seemed able to create from nothing.
Sewing, knitting, quilting, and watching her beloved birds at the feeders were all important parts of her life.
Vernice is survived by her son, Glenn (Lorraine); daughter, Karen Perreault (Frank); and grandchildren, Melanie Tribe (Gordon) and their sons, Philip and Richard, Grant Eklund (Phuong Hoang) and Grant’s daughter, Amanda, Shawn Eklund, Dan Perreault, and Ryan Perreault; along with the Tolton family, which Vernice always thought of as part of her immediate family.
She was predeceased by her parents, Harvey and Emma Holmes; husband, Rudy; and special cousin, Agnes Tolton.
A memorial service will be held Monday, Jan. 15, 2007 at 2 p.m. at the Nestor Falls United Church in Nestor Falls.
In lieu of flowers, in memoriam donations can be made to the Nestor Falls United Church or a charity of your choice.
A tree will be planted in memory of Vernice Eklund in the Blake Funeral Chapel Memorial Grove.
