Roy Summers, 82, of Rainycrest Home for the Aged, a longtime resident of 524 Third St. W., Fort Frances, Ont., passed away Sunday, July 19, 1998 at La Verendrye Hospital (Continuing Care Unit) in Fort Frances.
Roy was born Sept. 20, 1915 in Winnipeg, Man. Following his father’s passing in 1918, Roy moved with his mother to Emo, Ont. in 1919, where he was raised.
He was united in marriage to Lillian Doupe on May 17, 1941 and shortly thereafter left for England with the Canadian armed forces. Roy served overseas with the 7th Anti-Tank Regiment from 1941-1945 as a tank driver and heavy equipment operator in England, North Africa, Italy, France, and Germany.
In 1946, Roy and his wife, Lillian, returned to the Rainy River District, where he joined the Fort Frances Fire Department and settled in Fort Frances. He worked as a fireman from 1946 until his retirement in October, 1975.
Roy enjoyed fishing, the outdoors, and camping with his grandchildren at Caliper Lake and Lake of the Woods, provincial parks, particularly during his retirement. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Br. 29, as well as a past member of the Session of the Knox United Church.
He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend. Roy was a giving person expecting nothing in return. He will be sadly missed, but not forgotten, by his family.
He was predeceased by his wife, Lillian (August, 1997); father, George Summers; mother, Hattie Summers-Bethune; stepfather, Dr. Frederick Bethune; brothers, Fred, Bobby, and Alec Bethune; and sister, Kay Howe.
Roy is survived by his sons, Allan and wife, Rosan, of Fort Frances, Ont., and Robert and wife, Mary Ann, of Regina, Sask.; five grandchildren, Roy and Julie of Fort Frances, and Jocelyn, Erin, and Adrian of Regina; sister, Viola and husband, Fred Greene, of Courtney, B.C.; and numerous nephews and nieces.
A memorial service will be held Wednesday, July 22, 1998 at 10:30 a.m. at Knox United Church in Fort Frances. Rev. Jeraldine Bjornson will officiate, with interment in Riverview Cemetery in Fort Frances.
Honourary pallbearers will be the Royal Canadian Legion Br. 29 Colour Party.
