Rowena Louise Hammond, 64, of Alberton Township, Ont., passed away suddenly with her family by her side on Tuesday, Nov. 10, 2009 at the Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg, Man.
She was born June 15, 1945 in Deloraine, Man. to the late Lawrence and Mary Leforte.
On Feb. 3, 1967, Rowena was united in marriage to Michael “Mike” Hammond. Following their marriage, they raised their two children, Michelle and James.
Rowena worked at La Verendrye General Hospital in Fort Frances for many years until her retirement in 1999.
At home, she enjoyed growing and looking after her flowers and vegetable garden. She liked to take on new things, and was very creative in many areas such as painting pictures, wood projects, floral arrangements, paper tolling, ceramics, and recently card-making.
Rowena also had a passion for animals, and they always were part of her life and important; from a single fish to a horse, they all mattered.
She loved her grandchildren and constantly was sending them little surprises in the mail and forever shopping for them.
Rowena loved to go to her cabin on Rainy Lake; it was the place she felt most alive and at peace.
She will be dearly missed by her family and many friends.
Rowena is survived by her husband, Michael “Mike” Hammond of Alberton Township, Ont., and their two children, Michelle (Dan) Morrow of New Waterford, N.S. and James Hammond (Sandra Larson) of Calgary, Alta.; two grandchildren, Mandy Bell and Jayden Morrow; and one great-granddaughter, Madilyn Dahl.
She also is survived by one sister, Delores (Bob) Jordan of Fort Frances, Ont.; four brothers, Brian (Lynn) LeForte and Clarence (Audrey) LeFort, all of Winnipeg, Man., Dennis LeForte of Moose Jaw, Sask., and Ron (Gail) LeForte of Winnipeg, Man.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by one brother, “Bucky” LeForte; and two sisters, Bernice Elyk and Sylvia Donaldson.
Funeral services will be held Monday, Nov. 16, 2009 at 2 p.m. at Green Funeral Home in Fort Frances.
Interment will take place in Riverview Cemetery in Fort Frances.
Family and friends may visit Sunday, Nov. 15, 2009 from 7-9 p.m. at Green Funeral Home.
The pallbearers will be Brian LeForte, Ron LeForte, Dennis LeForte, Aaron LeFort, Richard Hammond, and George Jordan.
