It is with great sadness that we announce Roseanna Kelly, 48, passed away at La Verendrye Hospital in Fort Frances, Ont. on Monday, April 21, 2008 with loving family and friends at her side.
Roseanna was born in Emo, Ont. on Aug. 27, 1959. In earlier years, Roseanna grew up in Ojibways of Onigaming First Nation, Ont.
Her interest in children led her to the teaching profession and she started teaching at the community school as a teaching assistant. She also attended Nipissing University to acquire her native language training.
She later moved to Fort Frances to continue her teaching in the Fort Frances education system.
She returned to school in Lakehead University in Thunder Bay, receiving her teaching certificate in native languages. She also received her teacher’s degree from the University of Ottawa.
Roseanna is survived by her common law partner, John Meekis of Fort Frances, Ont. She shares five children from a previous marriage with Daniel Kelly of Ojibways of Onigaming First Nation.
She will be sadly missed by her daughters, Rhonda Kelly and Joanne Kelly of Ojibways of Onigaming First Nation, Edna Kelly (Robert Horton) of Thunder Bay, Ont.; sons, Stanley Kelly and Russell Kelly of Ojibways of Onigaming First Nation, Ont.; and five grandchildren, Dayton Kelly, Mikinaak Kelly, Wynter Copenace, Cameron Letander, and Mason Letander.
She also is survived by her sisters, Dorothy Indian of Keewatin, Ont. and Agnus (Ruben) Cantin of Wabigoon First Nation; brothers, Albert Morrison of Keewatin, Ont., Fred (Gail) Morrison of Rat Portage, and Jerry Morrison of Kenora, Ont.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Roseanna was predeceased by her parents, Ella (Bob) and Alister Morrison; and her four brothers, Edwin, Donald, Conrad Sr., and Michael Morrison.
A traditional burial ritual will be held Thursday, April 24, 2008 at the
Ojibways of Onigaming First Nation gymnasium. Elder Gilbert Smith will officiate, with burial in the Ojibways of Onigaming First Nation Cemetery.
A wake will be held Wednesday evening, April 23, 2008 at the Ojibways of Onigaming First Nation gymnasium.
The pallbearers will be friends and family. The honourary pallbearers will be her closest friends.
