Roland “Rollie” Wilfred Andres

Roland (“Rollie”) Andres passed away peacefully on Saturday, Feb. 20, 2016 at the Medex Retirement Home in Ottawa, Ont. at the age of 88.
Roland was born Dec. 23, 1927 in Roblin, Man. to Julianna and Philip Andres.
Roland grew up on the family farm and moved to Fort Frances, Ont. in the early 1950s to work in the logging industry with the Werenko Brothers, and that is where he found his great appreciation of the bush and lakes.
He enjoyed fishing and his annual hunting trips, where he forged many great friendships. He was well-known to have a good sense of humour and wonderful work ethic.
Roland built his first cabin on Reef Point in 1963 and subsequent home, where many action-packed summers were spent with his family.
In later years, he built his dream home, where he lived with his beloved wife, Joan, until health concerns made it more practical for them to stay full-time at their winter home in Ottawa.
After years of logging, Roland was employed for 25 years at Boise Cascade in International Falls, Mn.
He was known as the “Reef Point Handyman,” always helping out the summer residents by making sure cabins were ready for their arrivals. He also founded and co-owned the Border Paving Company with his childhood friend from Roblin.
As well, Rollie was quite the card shark and a champion checker player—the game he played right up to the afternoon he passed away.
Roland loved his pets and always could be seen with a four-legged companion. Home was not complete without a dog and cat.
He looked forward to Joan bringing their dog, Max, for visits when his health prevented him from being at home. Emma, their cat, preferred to stay at home.
Roland was pre-deceased by his parents, Julianna and Philip Andres; brothers, Irvin, Ewald, and Oswald Andres; and sisters, Claudia Schnider and Frieda Doering.
Roland will be dearly missed by his family and friends. He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Joan Pearson; daughters, Lesley Andres (Hans) of Vancouver, B.C. and Vienna, Austria and Julie Crichton (David) of Fort Frances, Ont.; and granddaughters, Claire Sobkowicz (Jason and Dylan) of Fort Frances, Ont. and Alexandra Crichton of Waterloo, Ont..
He also is survived by his brother, Vernon (Ivy) of Yorkton, Sask.; sister, Martha Novokowski (Ed) of Williams Lake, B.C.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Cremation has taken place and a private family service will be held at a later date.
