Rodney (Rod) Salchert, 64, of 530 Second St. W., Fort Frances, Ont., passed away suddenly Monday, June 21, 2004 in Fort Frances.
He was born July 22, 1939 in Rainy River, Ont. to the late Ted and Bernice Salchert. Rod lived in Stratton, Ont. as a young child and moved to Fort Frances, where he graduated from Fort Frances High School and later held various jobs.
Rod began his career with the Lands and Forest, and spent many years at Quetico Provincial Park as a provincial park ranger. His career later continued in Fort Frances with the Ministry of Natural Resources until his retirement.
Rod was a self-taught and very well-known auctioneer throughout Rainy River District. His love of auctioneering continued, as well as his passion of tractors and the home farm.
Rod also spent many hours at his cabin on the farm in Stratton, known by many as Rod’s Little Acre.
He will be missed by his family and many friends.
Rod is survived by his four children, Michele and husband, Jean des Rivieres, of Brisbane, Australia, Roxanne McCabe and Ray Heibel of Fort Frances, Ont., Wade Salchert and Ashley of Winnipeg, Man., and Jannel and husband, Paul Kadwell, of Sudbury, Ont.; and eight grandchildren Jean-Luc and Phillipp des Rivieres, Robert Dean and Sarah Paterson, and Mackenzie, Paige, Claudia, and Jillian Kadwell.
He also is survived by three brothers, Wayne Salchert and wife, Betty, of Devlin, Ont., Kenny Salchert and wife, Elizabeth, of Halifax, N.S., and Lance Salchert of Fort Frances, Ont.; one sister, Penny Armstrong of Dryden, Ont.; many aunts and uncles, nieces, nephews; and Lyndawn Ross and family.
A celebration of Rod’s life will be held Friday, June 25, 2004 at 2 p.m. at the Stratton Millennium Hall in Stratton, with Pastor Brian Keffer officiating.
Friends may visit Friday, June 25, 2004 from 1 until 2 p.m. at the Stratton Millennium Hall.
The pallbearers will be Murnie Allan, Rod Carter, Roman Hasiuk, Mel Morken, Bill Shine, and Dan Whaley.
Should family and friends so desire, in memoriam donations may be made to the charity of your choice. Anyone wishing to may bring wild flowers to contribute at the service as Rod loved wild flowers.
