Waa Say Giizhig – Wauzhushk Doodem

Rick Kabatay, 41, passed away on Tuesday, September 14, 2021, in Thunder Bay, Ontario.

He was born on May 7, 1980, in Fort Frances, Ont., to Stewart Henderson and Barbara Kabatay. They spent a few years in Seine River First Nation before moving to Mitaanjigamiing First Nation. Rick was a free spirit who traveled and moved often as an adult but he always referred to Mitaanjigamiing as his home. He loved music, he played many instruments, sang and loved to listen to all genres. He enjoyed camping, especially with family, playing video games and poker. He was a kind, big-hearted man who was generous. He would help anyone in need even when he didn’t have much to spare. He was a loving son, brother, father, uncle, nephew and friend. Rick had a contagious smile, an amazing sense of humour and he was always cracking jokes.

Rick leaves behind his father Stewart Henderson; children Bryce, Aara and Brody Kabatay; brother Stuart Kabatay; sister Jodie Kabatay ; sister-in-law Jenna Rivas-Torres; nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins to many to mention.

He was predeceased by his mother Barbara Kabatay; grandmothers Annie Kabatay and Edith Quagon; grandfathers Sam Kabatay and Allan Henderson Sr.; and by an infant niece.

A traditional wake will be held on Thursday, September 23, 2021, at 4:00 p.m. at the Mitaanjigamiing First Nation Gymnasium. Funeral services will be held on Friday, September 24, 2021, at the Mitaanjigamiing First Nation Gymnasium.
