RICHARD EARL MATHESON

Richard Earl Matheson passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, May 7, 2026, leaving behind family and friends who will deeply miss his presence, humour, and stubborn spirit. Richard lived life in his own way — independent, hardworking, and happiest when he was outdoors, with family, or working with his hands.

At just six years old, Richard attended Sir James Whitney School for the Deaf, where he formed lifelong friendships with Paul Baker and John Baird. During his years away from home, he spent much of his time with their families, creating bonds and memories that remained important throughout his life. Friends affectionately nicknamed him “Crash,” “Notepad” and “Rolaids,” names that brought smiles and stories to those who knew him best.

Richard spent time living in Edmonton and Ottawa before eventually returning home. A skilled welder by trade, he had a natural talent for anything mechanical and could fix, build, or improve just about anything. He was proud to own his own home and took great care of the things he worked hard for.

Richard loved boats, snowmachines, and anything with an engine. Going fast gave him a sense of freedom, and whether he was running his boat as fast as it could go across the water or heading out on a trail, he was happiest in motion. Many of his best memories were made spending summers outdoors at Sandpoint and Prairie Portage with his brothers and sisters.

Richard will be deeply missed by his brothers Don Matheson and Bruce (Sheila) Matheson; his sisters Janet (Wade) Bell and Kathleen Matheson; and his nieces, nephews, and extended family; Chris (Aimee, Ainsley & Abigail), Nicole (Connor, Corbin, Cayson, Keegan & Khyler), Tyler (Carleigh), Lauren (Guillaume), April (Paul), Jocelyn, Robert (Dawn, Ben, Theo, Kendrick, Isabelle), Meghan (Shaun, Gianna), Donald (Krysta, William, Alexander), and Gordon.

He was predeceased by his younger brother Graham Douglas Matheson (Trish); and by his parents Gordon Matheson and Margaret “Helen” Matheson.

A private service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations in Richard’s memory may be made to Best for Kitty or to a charity of your choice.

Richard will be remembered for his strong will, mechanical mind, sense of adventure, and the many stories and memories he leaves behind with those fortunate enough to have known him. FAC ET SPERA — “I do and hope” — a phrase that speaks to a life lived with determination and quiet optimism.
