Rachel Violet Ducharme, 95, of Rainycrest Home for the Aged, 550 Osborne St., Fort Frances, Ont., passed away at her residence Monday, July 2, 2001. She was born Jan. 3, 1906 in Sleeman, Ont. to the late Lionel George and Rachel Jane Armstrong.
Violet attended high school in Rainy River. She moved with her husband, Joseph, and their children to Rainy River in 1943.
She then moved to Sioux Lookout, Ont. in 1950 and lived there until 1986, when she moved to Fort Frances to live with her son, James, and his wife, Mary.
She was a member of the Rebekah Lodge in Sioux Lookout, and a member of the Ladies Trainmen Association and the St. Andrew’s United Church in Sioux Lookout.
She was an avid curler and also a member of the Sioux Lookout Curling Club. She was a very jolly person who enjoyed spending time with her family.
Violet is survived by her son, James (Mary) DuCharme of Fort Frances; and her two daughters, Elaine (Angus) McLellan and Lorna (Terry) Maxwell, all of Sioux Lookout.
Also surviving are her grandchildren, Christopher (Doreen) DuCharme of Fort Frances, Douglas (Carol) DuCharme of Winnipeg, Man., and Gregory (Tammy) DuCharme of Fort Frances and their families, Debra (Bob) Whalen of Sioux Lookout and their family, Carol (Tony) George of Sioux Lookout and their family, Angus (Susan) McLellan of Sioux Lookout and their family, Wendy (Bill) McDonald of Sioux Lookout and their family, Arlene (Peter) Staples of Sioux Lookout, Lynda Robertson of Sioux Lookout and her family, Patricia (Greg) Lang of Toronto and their family, Cheryl (Peter) Basso of Sioux Lookout and their family, Andre (Donna) DuCharme of Sioux Lookout and their family, Catheryn (Bob) Auld of Sioux Lookout and their family, Laura (Benoy) Guha of Sioux Lookout and their family, Colleen (Michael) Lorteau of Sioux Lookout and their family, and Glen (Barb) Maxwell of Thunder Bay and their family.
Also surviving are her daughter-in-law, Alice Ducharme of Sioux Lookout; sister-in-law, Dorothy Armstrong; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Violet was united in marriage March 16, 1931 to Joesph George Ducharme, who predeceased her Nov. 2, 1978.
She also was predeceased by her sons, Lionel and Maxwell; brothers, Holgar Armstrong and his wife, Fanny, and Charles Armstrong and his wife, Gladys; sisters, Myrtle Huntley and husband, Morris, Lois Venables and husband, Bill, and Annie O’Niell and husband, Rod; and daughter-in-law, Barb DuCharme.
At Violet’s request, cremation has taken place in Thunder Bay, Ont.
Memorial services will be held Saturday, July 14, 2001 at 11 a.m. at the Sioux Lookout Funeral Home in Sioux Lookout. Rev. Angus McLellan will officiate, with interment to follow in the Sioux Lookout Cemetery.
