Pete Makarchuk, age 72, of 931 Victoria Ave. N., Fort Frances, Ont., passed away suddenly on Wednesday, July 18, 2007 at La Verendrye General Hospital in Fort Frances, Ont.
Dad was born on Sept. 8, 1934 in Fort Frances, Ont. to the late William and Justyna Makarchuk and grew up in the north end of town. He was so proud of his Ukrainian neighbourhood that he moved across the street from his childhood home where he raised his family to appreciate our heritage with food, song and dance.
Dad was active in sports, but excelled in hockey. Although Dad was not a hockey player on the winning Allan Cup Team, he was very proud to have been a member of the team and was instrumental in all of the Team Reunions over the years. Dad loved to hunt, so much, that he and our mother built a hunting cabin north of Pinewood where they spent a lot of their time, not only hunting together but visiting friends and making lasting memories for our family.
He loved to read, especially about war history. But the best stories were told by our Dad. He had the gift of a great memory and told stories even better than we remembered them and was always one to rattle off jokes, one right after the other.
Dad was employed at the Paper Mill in Fort Frances as a Papermaker for 39 years, retiring in 1992. Dad was a member of the local Fort Frances Sportsman Club and the Royal Canadian Legion Br. 29.
Dad is survived by his soul mate of 52 years Pamela (Busch) Makarchuk of Fort Frances, Ont. and his six children Julie (Jack) Matheson of Thunder Bay, Ont., Anita Makarchuk (Peter Aryszuk) of Oshawa, Ont., Carol Lee Ozero (Dennis Vitt) of Winnipeg, Man., Amy (Todd) Marchuk of Fort Frances, Ont., Peter (Julie) Makarchuk of Thunder Bay, Ont., Paula Makarchuk of Thunder Bay, Ont., and all his “little people” Ryan and Trevor Matheson, Nathan and Tyler Kempf and Alycia Artyszuk, Tessa and Tanner Ozero, Eric and Krystine Marchuk, Carissa Makarchuk, and Ari and Alexandra Boon, as well as five “great little people” Tyrell, Darnell, ShayLynn, BrookLynn and Savannah.
Dad is also survived by his brother John (Barbara) Makarchuk of Bergland Lake, Ont., and sister Mary (Joe) Schryer of Thunder Bay, Ont. and their children Stephen Schryer and Cindy (Larry) Green, as well as numerous nieces and nephews from our Mother’s family that he loved to share his stories with.
Predeceasing Dad were his sister Nettie Casada ad two great grandchildren Noah and Angel.
Lifelong friends and active pallbearers will be Ray Coran, Ross Pearson, John Hazel, and Bill Selman with Honourary Pallbearers being Gerry Martin, Bennie Beck, George Mylenchuk, Joe Bolzan, Dick Carpenter, Gordy Calder, Ted Berry and Robert Hoehn.
