Peter Oak, 87, a resident of Rainycrest Long-Term Care in Fort Frances, Ont., passed away Tuesday, Nov. 2, 2010.
He was born Oct. 4, 1923 to John and Anna Oak, who lived on a riverside farm in Crozier.
Peter attended Fort Frances High School. After graduation, he was a pilot with the RCAF during World War II.
At war’s end, he returned to Fort Frances and began a long career with the Canadian National Railroad. He became their regional sales representative, travelling widely.
Upon retirement, Peter joined the Norman G. Jensen Customs brokerage firm as their Western Provinces representative.
He was predeceased by his wife, Alice (Busby), in 1987.
Peter always loved the outdoors, and also enjoyed square dancing, concerts, and travel.
He was very active in the Shriners, and worked diligently for many charitable organizations as well as for the Backus Auditorium group and the Railroad Depot preservation effort.
Peter is survived by his brother, Robert Oaks; nephew, Scott Oaks; great-nephew, Dane Oaks; niece, Danielle Oaks; great-niece, Michaela; and sister, Myrna Vindum.
Pete was a man of keen intelligence and quiet dignity, admired by many of his level head and acts of kindness.
He will be greatly missed by his true friend, Jean Harris, and their very best friend, Missy.
A memorial service will be held Tuesday, Nov. 9, 2010 at 10:30 a.m. at Rainycrest.
