It is with profound sadness that the children of Pamela Mary Oliver announce her sudden passing, at the age of 91, on Wednesday, May 16, 2018.
Pam was born on June 7, 1926 to the late Fred and Decima Parsons in Clydach, Wales, where she spent her teenage years during World War II serving in the Women’s Land Army.
It was here she met the love of her life, Bert Oliver, while he was on leave from the army visiting relatives.
They were married in October of 1945 and the next year, she immigrated to Canada as a “War Bride,” sailing alone on the Aquitaina as Bert was released from duty then.
It was a tremendous adjustment, leaving the only home she had ever known to arrive in the small remote town of Fort Frances and move in with her in-laws until they could get their own house, where she devoted her life to raising her five children.
Pam made many friends in the community, especially becoming very active and close with her “sisters” in the Overseas Wives Club.
Her special place was at their cabin at Bears Pass, hosting many friends and relatives who enjoyed her amazing meals and baking. You always could count on being served an afternoon treat along with a cup of tea.
She also had quite the green thumb, and tended dozens of flower beds which bloomed beautifully under her tender loving care.
The endless wildlife at the lake certainly benefitted from her attentions, as well. Pam had a soft spot for all of it–feeding the birds was a favourite pastime; you often could find her at the dock feeding the ducks and looking for turtles’ eggs on the beach, and the squirrels ate right out of her hand.
She had a love of animals that extended to her own home, raising many dogs throughout her lifetime.
She and Bert travelled extensively during their retirement, returning to Wales and England many times to visit loved ones.
Sadly, Pam lost Bert in 2010 after 64 years of marriage. They meant everything to one another, and it gives us some comfort knowing that they are together again.
Pam also was predeceased by her brothers, Frederick and Ken; as well as her sister, June.
Pam is survived by her five children, Darcy (Diane), Kenneth, Carolyn, Trevor (Roberta), and James, all of Fort Frances, Ont.
She also is survived by her grandchildren, Pam, Debbie, Robert, Brandis, and Andrea; and their children, Keegan, Kaitlyn, Miami, Benjamin, Jayger, Decyma, Devyn, and Cayden; as well as numerous extended family members that hold special memories of Pam.
Cremation has taken place.
A celebration of life will take place Monday, May 28, 2018 at 11 a.m. at St. John’s Anglican Church in Fort Frances.
Should friends and family so desire, in memoriam donations may be made to Fort Frances and District Community Living or St. John’s Anglican Church.
“Your presence we miss, our memories we treasure; loving you always, forgetting you never.”
