An old pilot gets his wings.
The world is a different place today without a wonderful husband, dad, stepdad, brother, uncle, and grandpa named Bud.
Orlo Jackson (Bud) Mallory passed away Thursday, Feb. 17, 2011 at La Verendrye General Hospital in Fort Frances, Ont.
Bud was born Dec. 10, 1923 in Fort Frances to Buzz and Bea Mallory. He grew up in Fort Frances and, as a young man, joined the Canadian Army Military Intelligence Corp.
After the war, he joined the Fort Frances Police Force and then the Ontario Provincial Police.
Over the years, Bud operated several businesses in Fort Frances, including The Steak House, The Emperor Hotel Dining Room, The Rendez-Vous, and Captain Robbie’s.
He also became a pilot; he and Vern Jones were instrumental in opening the north to hunting and fishing along the coast of Hudson’s Bay and the Artic at Chantry Inlet.
He started his own air service, Canadian Voyageur Airlines, which developed into the first scheduled air service connecting Fort Frances to Thunder Bay, Winnipeg, and Toronto.
He also was involved in the development of the Fort Frances Airport through Canadian Voyageur Airlines.
As a young man, Bud and his family lived at Big Trout Lake for three years, where they were in charge of the medical services for the community.
Bud always was looking for new challenges and enjoyed being involved in the community. He was a charter member and served as president of the Fort Frances Lions Club and the NOW Air Carriers Association.
He also was a regular at all the sports shows. Bud was an outdoorsman who loved fishing and hunting.
He married Rosemary Doyle Folkers on March 17, 1980 and together they took many winter breaks in Mexico, where he enjoyed people watching and eating shrimp.
He always had a smile, a laugh, and a story to share. Of late, mornings were spent with his coffee friends and his best friend, Joe George, at A&W.
He leaves behind his wife, Rosemary; son, Rob, and his children, Robin (Len), Trisha (Mark), Sarah, and Jonathan; daughters, Charleen, and her son, Robert, and Jennene and her children, Cheryse, Joseph, Collette, Shawn, Mick, and Jamie; great-grandchildren, Griffin, Jordan, and Emma; and stepsons, Kurt (Wendy) Folkers and their children, Katelynne, Cameron, Cody, and Whitney, and Eric Folkers and his daughter, Abby.
Also surviving are his sister, Beverly Renaud; brother-in-law, Robert Wells; nieces and nephews, Murray, Bradley, and Pauline Hogan, Bob and Tracy Wells, and Brian, Chris, Kim, and Barbara Renaud; and good friends, Joe George and Barbara Mallory.
Bud was predeceased by his parents; and sisters, Collen Wells and Josephine Hogan.
At Bud’s request, cremation has taken place and a private interment will take place later this spring.
The family gratefully requests that in memoriam donations be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, 920 Frenette Ave., Fort Frances, Ont., P9A 3N4 or the Canadian Diabetes Association, 501-200 South Syndicate Ave., Thunder Bay, Ont., P7E 1C9.
