It is with great sadness that the family of Orest Gushulak announces his passing on Saturday, Nov. 12, 2016 at the Rainy River Health Centre in Rainy River, Ont. after a long battle with cancer.
Orest was born Dec. 7, 1946 in Vita, Man. to Michael and Alicey Gushulak.
The family moved to Fort Frances, Ont. when Orest was a small boy. He graduated from school and started his banking career, and later attended Ryerson studying business and banking.
Karen moved to Fort Frances in 1966 and they started dating shortly after that. They were married on July 27, 1968. Orest loved to talk about how he married the girl next door.
Orest started as a loans officer with the Bank of Nova Scotia before joining the Credit Union. He worked his way up to manager, and worked in many of the branches in Northwestern Ontario and Manitoba.
They settled in Rainy River in 1986, where Orest worked as branch manager until his retirement. He also owned and operated the Rainy River Hotel until its closing.
The family took many trips when the children were young; he loved to fish and spend time with his family and friends. He also loved to tinker and spent much of his retirement fixing appliances. He loved to figure out how thing worked by taking them apart.
Orest’s famiy meant the world to him. He was very proud of his children and a living Gedo to his grandchildren.
He leaves behind his wife, Karen; son, Neil (Charlene) of Brandon, Man.; and daughter, Cheryl (Dino) Pugliese of Thunder Bay, Ont. and their children, Naleah, Kole, and Lisamarie.
He also is survived by his siblings, Dennis (Donna) of Ear Falls, Ont., Gary (Kim) of Dryden, Ont., and Iris (Ted) Gogosha of Fort Frances, Ont.; sisters-in-law, JoAnn (LeRoy) Charbonneau of Theodore, Sask. and Lori (Dave) Eaton of Thunder Bay, Ont.; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.
Orest was predeceased by his parents, Michael and Alicey; and siblings, Walter, George, and William Gushulak, and Lillian Mcteague and Mary Franko.
Cremation has taken place and a private family interment will be held at a later date.
