Mrs. Olga Wilkie, 79, passed away on Monday, May 12, 2003 at Versa Care in Thunder Bay, Ont., after a lengthy illness.
She was born in LaVallee on Oct.
24, 1923 to Joseph and Katherine Vennechenko and was educated in Fort Frances.
She moved to Fort William to work at Canada Car during the war. Olga met and later married Paul Wilkie on Sept. 18, 1943.
Following the war, they opened a grocery store (Randy’s) on Frederica Street. Later she worked at Sears in the 1980s, until retirement.
Olga enjoyed crafts, especially knitting (stemming from the Knitting Circle–a group of women from Can-Car), bridge, gardening, and her time at the cottage at Trout Lake.
Olga is survived by Paul, her husband of 59 years; their children, Randy, Bonilyn and Mitch (Zheng); and grandchildren, Kyle, Meagan and Phoenix.
She also is survived by her sisters; Janet (Dino) Sicoli, of St. Catharines, Mary (Jim) Higgins of Thunder Bay, and Helen (Ed) Eldridge of Fort Frances; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
She was predeceased by her brother, Bill Vennechenko; and sisters, Ann Baran and Dolly Bain.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, May 20, 2003 at the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of St.
Volodymyr, with Fr. Vasyl Maluzynsky officiating. Interment followed at Mountain View Cemetery.
