NORMAN JOHNSON

Norman Johnson, late of Chilliwack, B.C., passed away Jan. 16, 2003 at the age of 96. He was born in Duluth, Mn. on Aug. 13, 1906.
For many years, Norm was a proud employee of the men’s wear department of the T. Eaton Co. in Winnipeg, Man. He then accepted a management position with the R.C.A. store in Fort Frances, Ont.
After a number of years, he left R.C.A. to become self-employed as a Customs broker in Fort Frances. He enjoyed his work immensely until he retired at the age of 75.
Norm always was very active in municipal affairs and while in Fort Frances, served many years on the Board of Parks Management.
Free Masonry also was a large part of Norm’s life, and he was a Past Master of Granite Lodge #446 A.F. & A.M. He also served as District Deputy Grand Master of Western District.
Norm also was a member of Alberton Chapter, Royal Arch Masons, a life member of Ledger Preceptory #70 and Khartum Temple of the Shrine in Winnipeg, Man.
For more than 60 years, Norm was a member of the Kiwanis organization both in Fort Frances and also in Chilliwack, being a member of the Golden K Club. Norm was recognized by Kiwanis International in 1984 by being granted a life membership.
Norm was very proud of his Norwegian heritage and was active in his early years with the Norwegian Glee Club in Winnipeg, and attended many a “Sangerfest” throughout midwestern Canada and the U.S.
While in Chilliwack, he enjoyed singing with the Heritage Singers and also was a member of the Sons of Norway. Music was important to Norm, and he composed and wrote many songs.
To help keep his mind agile, Norm loved to play cribbage. His abilities were evidenced by the club trophies he won playing with the Chilliwack Senior Veterans, including the rare “29” hand.
Many hours of enjoyment also were provided playing Bingo and doing crossword puzzles.
A Service of Remembrance was held at the chapel of Henderson’s Funeral Home on Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2003 at 10 a.m., with Rev. Herb Hilder officiating. Cremation took place at Valley Crematorium.
Norman is survived by his son, Earl (Carolyn) of Kenora, Ont.; daughter, Diane Anderson of Kelowna, B.C.; two granddaughters, Krista Johnson and Lara Anderson; one brother, Erling (Audrey) of Toronto, Ont.; two sisters, Alice Young of Chilliwack, B.C. and Gudrunn Halling of Winnipeg, Man.; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Gertie in 1986; and grandson, Erik Johnson in 1996.
