It is with great sadness that the family of Neonewapenase “Mushom” Smith announce his peaceful passing on July 21, 2026 at Laverendrye Hospital in Fort Frances, On. with his family by his side.
Mushom was born in Naicatchewenin First Nation to Sally and Billy Smith.
Left to mourn his loss and cherish his memories is his loving wife of 48 years Lorraine, his children: Barb, Rhonda (Moyan), Raechel (Adrian), Tara (Alton Lee), Waylon (Crystal), Chris, Jon and his son-in-law Darryl Sakchekapo. His siblings: Irene, Doris, Darlene, Lillian, Dennis, Wanda, Brian, Sandra, Charlene, Daniel and Derek. He leaves behind 28 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his parents, his infant son Jr. (lost in 1972), grandchildren: Adrian Jr., infant in 1994, Ashley, Darryl Jo, Twins and baby Micah. His brother Robert and sister Sylivia. Special friends: Missle, Buddy, Moot, Clarence, Steve Mainville and his many dog companions.
In the past, Mushom owned and operated “Tom’s Confectionary & Gas Bar”. He served on council for several terms, worked as a NNADAP worker, and logger in his community. He loved his community!
He revived Anishinaabe counselling along side Armand Jourdain. He organized Fun in the Sun pow-wows with exceptional turn outs. He was fluent in the Ojibwe language. He was a man of wisdom who helped keep our traditions alive.
Mushom was very family oriented. He loved country music, dancing, playing the guitar, and dressing up for Halloween. He also loved watching sports. He was a die-hard Leafs and Toronto Blue Jays fan.
Although he endured a double amputation that didn’t stop him from travelling around Treaty 3. He redefined what strength meant and was very resilient.
He always promoted the importance of education. He loved watching his grandsons play sports. He was always proud of his family’s accomplishments and wanted them all to succeed in life.
A wake was held on Monday, July 27, 2026 at Northridge Funeral Home Ltd. Emo, Ontario with a traditional service on Tuesday, July 28, 2026 at Naicatchewenin Gymnasium, Northwest Bay First Nation, Naicatchewenin F.N., ON P0W 1E0.
Mushom had an amazing team of health care professionals that showed him love and compassion.
He will be missed dearly. Niigaan’inaabin!(Keep moving forward)
