It is with deep sadness that the family of Nellie Shybyski, age 95, of Fort Frances, Ontario announces her passing on Thursday, July 28, 2011 at La Verendrye Hospital.
Nellie was born on May 11, 1916 in Rainy River to the late John and Pauline Chornuik.
In 1925, she moved to Fort Frances where she received her education.
During the War years, from 1942 to 1947, she operated the Victory Café and then she operated the Quality Clothing Store from 1948 to 1958.
She was a member of the Horticulture Society, St. Mary’s Church and the CWL, Sister Kennedy Centre, the Ladies Curling Club, La Verendrye Hospital and Rainycrest Auxiliary.
She spent time at the Centre playing cards and took in all the games. She also loved gardening and did a lot of volunteering.
Left to cherish her memory is her daughter, Valli (Murray) Fairnington, and grandsons, Mark and Bradley, and her great-granddaughter, Kiera Fairnington, who was her pride and joy.
Also surviving are sisters-in-law Mary Marmus, Blanche Bernier, and many nieces and nephews.
Nellie was predeceased by her first husband, Adam Olinyk, on May 23, 1956, and her second husband, Bronie (Przybylski) Shybyski, on Aug. 9, 1982.
She was also predeceased by her brothers, Michael, Frank and Peter; brothers-in-law Charlie, Stanley and Michael Olinyk, George Bernier, William Marmus, Michael, Stanley, Joseph Walter and Frank Przybylski; and sisters-in-law Eileen Olinyk, Mary Madger and Irene Przybylski.
A funeral mass was held on Tuesday, Aug. 2, 2011 at 11 a.m. at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church in Fort Frances.
Father Kris McKusky officiated followed by interment in Holy Cross Cemetery in Fort Frances.
Friends visited Monday evening from 6:30 p.m. followed by vigil prayers at 7:00 p.m. at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church.
The active pallbearers were Don Roth, Tufiel George, Alan Eide, Larry Oveson, Jeff Oveson and Bob Mitchelson.
The honourary pallbearers were Arlene (Plum) Byrnes, Diane Graham and Della Barniuk.
