MINERVA JANE HASTINGS LUIKART

Minerva Jane Luikart died of natural causes on April 10, 2008 at the age 102 at the Waterford Care Center in Juno Beach, Florida.
The memorial service will be held Saturday, July 12 at 10 a.m. with Rev. Curt Moermond officiating. The burial will be following the service at Memorial Park Cemetery.
She was born March 3, 1906 in North Platte, Nebraska to Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Hastings. She attended the University of Nebraska (1923-1926), and was a member of the Phi Beta Phi Sorority.
She taught in McCook, Nebraska from 1926-1927. She married Gordon Augustus Luikart in 1928 and lived in Riverton, Wyoming.
In the years 1929-1947 she lived in Lincoln, Nebraska. She finished her degree in 1944 from NU and moved to Sioux City, Iowa in 1947. Gordon founded Luikart Insurance Agency at this time.
She was a member of the Junior League of Lincoln and a sustaining and active member of the Sioux City Junior League. She was a member of St. Thomas Episcopal Church and served on the alter guild for many years.
She taught in the Sioux City Public School System for 24 years. She taught at Woodrow Wilson and Herbert Hoover schools.
She founded the first library at Herbert Hoover School and was a member of the N. E. A. and the I. S. E. A.
She retired from teaching in 1974 and moved to West Palm Beach, Florida. a few years later.
She enjoyed playing bridge, weaving, music, reading, antiques and travel. The Luikarts were longtime fans of Nebraska Football and traveled six times to Europe. Also, the Luikart’s spent many of their summers at their cabin in Nestor Falls, Ontario.
She is survived by two sons: Gordon Augustus Luikart Jr. and wife, Mary Kathryn Lloyd Luikart; and Edwin Hastings Luikart and deceased Nancy Conway Luikart; five grandchildren: Gordon A. Luikart, III of West Palm Beach, Florida, Kathryn Luikart Uhr of Austin, Texas, Missi Lloyd Luikart of Wellington, Florida, Dr. Gordon Hastings Luikart of Missoula, Montana and Le Anne Luikart Freesemann of Tulsa, Oklahoma.
She had five great-grandchildren: Genevieve Luikart, Shayne Uhr, Camron Uhr, Jenava and Josiah Freesemann, Braydon and Madyson Luikart. She also had two great-great-grandchildren: Brenden and Kailyn Uhr.
She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Loren Hastings and Lewis Royer Hastings, and by her husband, Gordon Augustus Luikart, Sr. who died in 1981. He was a gun crew weapons officer on the Liberty Ships in the U. S. Navy during World War II.
