Michael Callaghan passed away on December 19, 2022, after a long illness. Michael, or simply Callaghan, was born and raised in Fort Frances. Good hospitality, a “bump,” and a game of cards could all be expected at Callaghan’s house for whomever dropped by (“the door’s always open”). His home growing up at 322 2nd St E. was the same way, with his parents Mary (née Craigen) and Wes (aka Kelly). Despite his brothers Dale (Phyllis) and Jack (deceased) being much older when Michael was born, the brothers were all very close.

After going to Carleton University and becoming involved with ministry, Michael moved to the U.S. and married his now former wife, Denise Callaghan in Grand Forks, N.D. They had three children, Luke, Katie (Ben) Paredes, and Erin (Kristefor) Lysne. Later in life he met his match and married Kristine Kubes. For most of his adult life he lived in Minneapolis.

Despite not having lived in Fort Frances for many decades he always considered it home. Michael brought his family at least once a year to Dale’s cottage by The Mermaid. Growing up his kids and now grandkids heard his stories about buying penny candy at Andy’s Candyland, parish life at St. Mary’s, his first job delivering groceries at Bernardi’s, and fishing on Rainy.

His funeral was held in Minneapolis.
