Mervin Hayes, 62 years, of Fort Frances, Ont. passed away peacefully Friday, March 3, 2000 at Thunder Bay Regional Hospital (Port Arthur) after a brief battle with cancer.
Mervin was born Sept. 20, 1937 in Miscampbell, Ont. He will be remembered as a jack-of-all-trades–a putterer, who, with torch or carpenter’s tools, could build, repair, and do ’most anything.
He had a great love for the outdoors, where he spent a many a day fishing, hunting, trapping, and just enjoying the beauty of God’s creation.
Mervin is survived by his partner, Nancy Jones, of Red Gut Bay; his children, Randy (Karin) Hayes of Atikokan, Pam (John) Bell of Thunder Bay, Scott (Sharon) Hayes of Calgary, Alta., and Corey (Susan) Hayes of Atikokan; and his grandchildren, Amber, Daniel, Lindsay, Christopher, Alex, Calvin, Samara, and Hannah.
Also surviving are his siblings, Wesley (Jean) Hayes and Allan (Dorothy) Hayes, both of Fort Frances, Gladys (George) Hughes of Thunder Bay, and Aileen Ryan and Maxine (Jim) Lamb, both of Winnipeg; sister-in-law, Isla Hayes of Fort Frances; as well as many other relatives and those whose lives he touched, in their hearts and minds, their courage and consciences.
He was predeceased by his parents, Bill and Frances Hayes; his brothers, Art, Edwin, Harmon, and Basil; and his brother-in-law, Gerald Ryan.
Memorial services were held Saturday, March 11, 2000 at Knox United Church in Fort Frances, with Rev. Patrick Playfair officiating.
Interment will take place at a later date in Burriss Cemetery.
