It is with great sadness that the family of Melvin Harvey Haukaas announce his passing on August 14, 2025, at La Verendrye Hospital in Fort Frances, Ontario.
Melvin was born on February 24, 1942, to Ole and Margaret Haukaas in Fort Frances, Ontario.
Melvin was a brother to Christine (Peter) Myrehaug, Florence Langtry and Sonja Eluik, who survive him. Also surviving are brothers-in-law David and Joe Kuchma; and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents Ole and Margaret; brothers Gordon and infant brother Bobby; brothers-in-law Jack Langtry and Nick Eluik; nephew Darren Eluik; and in-laws Joe and Stephanie Kuchma.

Melvin married his wife of 55 years, Katherine, on Valentines Day 1970. Together they had two children; daughter Carol (David), Katelyn and Wyatt; and son Ronald (Annie), Alaina, Jessica and Jeremiah and grandchildren Jason, Emberly, Mara and Elias.
He retired after 37.5 years of service at the mill working on the sorting gap, running the tugboat operator to captain the “Ward,” and petty bone loader operator in the wood yard.
Melvin’s favourite pastimes were boating, biking (both motor bikes and pedal bikes) and was happiest just puttering and helping others. He had a love of windmills and was known for creating many in the district. He also enjoyed traveling and the outdoors.
In the wishes of Melvin there will be no service. Cremation has taken place and interment will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memoriam donations may be made to a charity of your choice.
